Why Bovi told Basketmouth not to crack jokes at his shows
Nigerian comedian Bovi has offered heartfelt reflections on his relationship with fellow comedy giant Basketmouth, shedding light on the dynamics that shaped their connection and eventual divergence.
Speaking in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh, Bovi expressed both admiration and candid insights about their professional journey together.
“Basketmouth is a legend,” Bovi stated emphatically. “He was already a big name in comedy long before I stepped onto the scene. His influence in the industry is undeniable, and I’ve always held great respect for his craft.”
Bovi recalled their early days, sharing anecdotes that revealed the complex balance of camaraderie and competition between them. According to Bovi, Basketmouth often served as the MC at his shows.
While this collaboration might seem ideal, it came with unique challenges.
“I used to tell Basketmouth not to tell jokes during my events because he had this way of commanding the crowd with just a few words,” Bovi explained.
“Even when he kept it brief, he’d leave the audience in stitches, and I’d have to work twice as hard to follow that energy. But that’s who he is—a natural.”
The comedian revealed that as their careers flourished, their professional paths naturally diverged.
Both had reached a point where they could independently fill large venues and maximize their earnings without sharing profits. This practical decision marked the end of their frequent collaborations but not the respect they held for one another.
“Sometimes business gets in the way,” Bovi admitted.
“We realized that performing together wasn’t the best financial move for either of us. But that doesn’t change how I feel about him—he’ll always be a legend in my eyes.”
