It affects the quality of your life – Adesua Etomi on severe pregnancy sickness
Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington has opened up about her harrowing experience with hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness, during her second pregnancy.
“When I talk about the seriousness of hyperemesis gravidarum, people don’t get it and I hate it,” she wrote. “It is not ordinary morning sickness. It is a serious condition that literally affects the quality of your life.”
The actress and her husband, singer Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, welcomed their second child in 2024.
Adesua shared her struggles in response to a heartbreaking report about Jess Cronshaw, a pregnant UK woman who tragically took her own life after suffering from extreme morning sickness.
According to PEOPLE, Cronshaw endured hyperemesis gravidarum to such an extent that she became bedridden. The condition, which causes severe nausea, relentless vomiting, dehydration, and weight loss, can leave pregnant women physically and emotionally drained.
Adesua’s revelation brings much-needed attention to hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition often misunderstood or dismissed as routine pregnancy discomfort.
Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that goes beyond typical morning sickness.
It can lead to dehydration, weight loss, electrolyte imbalances, and even hospitalization in extreme cases. Unlike regular morning sickness, which usually subsides after the first trimester, HG can persist throughout pregnancy and severely impact a woman’s quality of life.
