The African Giant is dead – Burna Boy says his people killed him

In a deeply reflective and metaphor-laden post on the Instagram page of his upcoming album No Signs of Weakness, Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy made a striking revelation: the beloved “African Giant” persona is no more — and, according to him, it was his own people who killed it.

“The ‘African Giant’ BURNA BOY died. His own people killed him,” the message began, setting the tone for an emotional and introspective narrative that reveals the artist’s inner struggles and evolution.

The post went on to introduce Big 7, Burna’s newer persona or phase, describing it as a shield born out of heartbreak — a guardian protecting the last remnant of Burna Boy’s true self.

“Then ‘BIG 7’ was born to protect what was left of ‘BURNA BOY’.”

The message hinted at an internal war within the artist — a clash between who he was and who he’s become, forged in the fire of betrayal and disillusionment.

“BURNA BOY and BIG 7 fight each other a lot because while BIG 7 is only protecting the final and only existing piece of BURNA BOY’s BROKEN HEART, the ‘African Giant’ still haunts BURNABOY.”

This haunting metaphor underscores the emotional toll that fame, criticism, and perhaps rejection from his own community have taken on him.

It suggests that while Burna Boy has grown and transformed, the shadow of the “African Giant” — a symbol of pride, power, and cultural voice — still looms over him.
