I watched a child die – Noble Nketsiah on what inspired ‘Mmofra Yi’ song
Gospel musician Noble Nketsiah has revealed the painful real-life experience that inspired one of his most iconic songs, Mmofra Yi.
The award-winning artist recounted how a heartbreaking moment he witnessed on the streets of Kumasi shaped the emotional foundation of the track in an interview on Peace FM monitored by MyNewsGh.
“I was driving through the city during a slow jam when I saw something that completely broke me,” Noble said.
“There was a young boy begging for money. He walked up to a woman in a car just ahead of me.
“She was about to give him something when the traffic started moving, and she had to drive off.”
According to Noble, the same vehicle got caught in another hold-up a short distance away.
That’s when the beggar’s younger brother approached the same woman, hoping she would give him the money she hadn’t been able to pass to his older sibling.
“She gave the younger one the money this time,” Noble recalled.
“But what happened next was something I’ll never forget. The older brother, clearly upset, confronted the boy and insisted that the money was meant for him.”
What followed was a tragic escalation. “The younger boy resisted, and in the struggle, his older brother stabbed him with something sharp,” he recounted with visible emotion.
“I watched everything unfold from my car. A few taxi drivers and I jumped out and rushed the injured child to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.”
Sadly, despite their efforts, the young boy didn’t survive.
“It hit me so hard. I sat in the car, still shaking, and that’s when the melody came to me,” Noble said.
“I didn’t plan to write a song. It just came to me in that moment of pain. That’s how Mmofra Yi was born.”
