I don’t write my lyrics, I just flow
Ghanaian rapper Medikal has opened up about how he creates music — and apparently, writing lyrics down isn’t part of the process.
In an in-depth conversation with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM monitored by MyNewsGh, Medikal made it clear that he doesn’t write his verses before recording.
“Me, I no dey write maru at all. No, no, no. I don’t write. Anybody who’s ever been in the studio with me knows how I record,” he said. “I listen to the beat, get the idea, record a bit, pause, and continue. We call it ‘tro’. It depends on the mood and the vibe.”
He explained that if he’s not feeling the beat or isn’t in the mood, he doesn’t force it.
“If I’m not in the mood, I won’t even enter the studio. Sometimes I just go sit with my producer and listen to what we’ve already done,” he added.
When asked if producers ever complain about the spontaneity, Medikal said they’ve grown to accept his natural style of working. “It’s pay-as-you-go. I like the natural vibe,” he said.
He further explained that, for him, music isn’t just a job—it’s a part of who he is.
“It’s not work to me. It’s fun. It’s like a hobby. That’s why I can go to the studio right after dropping the hottest song in the country. I enjoy it.”
Medikal also shared that commercial songs — especially the catchy, radio-friendly ones — are the most difficult to create. “It’s easy for me to record punchlines and deep rap. But coming up with something catchy and simple for the masses? That’s hard. Songs like ‘Too Risky’ were tough because I had to try something new, with different styles and emotions,” he revealed.
On the possibility of dropping a singing-only project, Medikal said he’s open to it.
“I haven’t thought about it before, but maybe I should. I could drop an EP where I only sing and feature other rappers. That’d be fun.”
The interview took a fun turn as Andy Dosty joked about Medikal becoming “Singer Medikal,” with both of them laughing at the idea of a full rebrand.
