Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora, has suggested a “total penile amputation“, as punishment for men who engage in the act of rape in the country.
That he said would drastically check the rising cases of rape the country was recorded in recent times.
“I had argued this at a forum before and I said without any reservations that, if for the consideration for a global approach to de-emphasizing capital punishment, then what to me should be the minimum is total penile amputation because a woman that has been raped may never get over it in her entire life”
The Nigerian Health Minister was speaking in an interview with The PUNCH at Abuja on Friday.
According to him, the act that leaves an indelible mark on their victims was becoming an epidemic, especially during the COVID-19 season hence the need for a critical look to address it.
“I think that it would appear that the incident has increased within this period of COVID-19, which may just be a factor of people being kept at home because of the lockdown; socializing has greatly reduced and like it is said, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop” he added.
Nigeria’s Recent Rape Cases
Nigeria has been in the line light in recent times over multiple cases of rape and murder being recorded.
Last month, a twelve-year-old girl was reported to have been raped by a 57year old man and 11 others. According to the report, the 12-year-old was serial, raped for a period of 2 months.
Within the same period, a University student Uwaila Vera Omozuwa was raped and killed at a church in Edo State.
Again, an 18-year-old Barakat Bello suffered a gang-raped and murder by some yet to be identified rapists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Several others have been reported in Kano state.
The development had led to a national outcry; with thousands signing a petition with hashtag #We retired.
Globally, it is estimated that about a billion women and girls have suffered from rape.
