Dada Hafco explains why his name challenges Ghana’s beauty perceptions
Ghanaian highlife artiste Dada Hafco has clarified the intention behind his stage name, stating that it is a deliberate response to society’s obsession with lighter skin tones.
Speaking on Joy Prime monitored by MyNewsGh, he said the name is meant to provoke thought about beauty standards.
According to him, the concept of ‘hafco’ in Ghanaian parlance often implies a mixed-race or light-skinned person who is naturally considered more appealing. Hafco disagrees with that notion.
“If being hafco means being nice, then you can be dark and still be nice,” he explained.
He criticised the societal pressure that pushes people to bleach their skin, adding that some even extend the practice to their children.
“People peel off their dark skin because they think fair skin looks better. I’m saying beauty isn’t limited to light skin,” he said.
Hafco noted that the name is his way of proving that confidence and attractiveness are not tied to complexion. “You can be dark-skinned and still be a hafco. It’s the image I’m trying to paint,” he stressed.
