Milovan Rajevac tasked to win 2021 Afcon with Black Stars
Serbian gaffer Milovan Rajevac has been given an audacious target by the Ghana Football Association to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title next year.
The Black Stars have failed to win a major silverware since 1982 despite coming close to ending the trophy drought in the last decade, 2010 Angola losing to Egypt in the finals and in 2015 Equatorial Guinea- Gabon as the Stars lost to Ivory Coast on penalty shootout.
The 67-year-old has been appointed as replacement for Charles Kwabla Akonnor who was sacked over an unimpressive performance in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Milo was unveiled on Friday following his reappointment as the man to the lead Black Stars in the next two years.
The former Algerian coach will be assisted by Ghanaian duo of Otto Addo and Maxwell Konadu.
The domestic football governing body axed Akonnor and his two assistants last week following the team’s poor start to the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Rajevac’s first assignment is a doubleheader World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe next month.
Ghana are currently second in the standings after two rounds of the qualification matches of the global tournament.
The Serbian has been tasked to lead the Black Stars to a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Cameroon next January and also qualify the team to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Rajevac, in his first reign as Ghana’s coach, was named African Coach of the Year in 2010 after impressive outings at the AFCON and World Cup respectively.
The 67-year-old made history by leading the Black Stars in 2010 to reach the quarter-finals at the World Cup in South Africa.
Few months earlier, he led Ghana through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Angola in which they fell to Egypt.
Rajevac was a coach for Ghana between 2008 and 2010.
