Ghana Premier League, Division One Football League resumes in October

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo has announced the return of football activities in the country after about 7 months of its suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing the country in his 17^th Covid-19 update, the president noted that Ghana Premier League and the Division One Football League would restart on Friday, October 30, 2020.

The decision on the resumption of the league, he disclosed was made in consultation with Ghana Football Association.

“Fellow Ghanaians, with respect to football, after due consultations with the Ghana Football Association, it has been decided that the Ghana Premier League and the Division One Football League will restart on Friday, 30th October, with a full regime of testing of the players, technical and management staff”.

Rules for the resumption of the Leagues

As part of the measure governing the reopening, the President said no spectators would be allowed at the various training centers and the various  Stadiums would be opened to only twenty-five percent (25%) of its full capacity on march days to allow adequate social distancing.

“Wearing of masks by spectators at stadia will be mandatory” Nana Addo added.

The president also made known that further consultations would be made with the necessary authorities on the resumption of other sporting activities.

”The restart of all other sporting competitions will be determined on a case-by-case basis, pending consultations between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the respective sports associations”.

Suspension of Sporting activities

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as part of measures to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic on March 15, announced a suspension in all activities which involves public gatherings including football and other sporting activities.

With the suspension and cancellation of major leagues by the Confederation of Africa Football, (CAF), the Ghana Football Association also canceled the 2019-2020 league seasons in an Executive meeting held in June.
