Illegal mining (Galamsey) has been with us for over 100 years without posing a very serious threat to our environment. However, the recent spate of Galamsey has become a national security issue because of the debilitating effects on our water bodies, land, and forest reserves.
In view of the glaring calamity waiting to explode and the threat to our survival as humans, successive governments came up with several interventions to curb the menace. Some of the programs introduced to manage Galamsey include “Operation Vanguard”, “Operation Galamstop”, etc.
In spite of all these laudable efforts, the question of what the people will do when they stopped the illegal mining activities has never been tackled properly. When Patriotic Mouth Piece heard of the plan to launch and establish an office to solely look at how to provide alternative livelihood opportunities to these illegal miners, we were elated.
In fact, this has renewed our confidence in President Nana Akuffo-Addo to deal with Galamsey and find pragmatic solutions to it. We welcome the office of the National Alternative Employment Livelihood Programme (NAELP) and wish to commend President Nana Akuffo-Addo, Hon Samuel Jinapur, and Hon Mireku Duker for mooting this idea and moving a step forward to make it a reality.
It is our wish that those engaging in Galamsey will take advantage of NALEP to help stop Galamsey and to make our environment safe for both current and future generations.
