E-Levy: Bawumia is quiet; there must be a reason – Kwame Jantuah

A Private legal practitioner and Energy Expert, Mr Kwame Jantuah has questioned the seaming silence from the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over the proposed electronic transaction levy announced by the government.

According to him, the Vice President has been a vital part of the country’s digitization agenda and must be heard in such matters since MoMo falls under it.

Mr Kwame Jantuah questioned whether his silence is an indication he is not in support of the proposed E-Levy adding the “He comments on  most things”.

“Dzifa, am quite surprised that the second gentleman of this country is quiet. Have you heard his comment on E-levy. He comments on most things….”

“………..My point is that he is an integral part in the digitalization of this country and this MoMo has got to do with digitization. No comment even as a government person don’t we want to hear what he thinks about it. Is it that he is in opposition to it. We haven’t heard anything from the Vice President, there must be a reason,” Mr Kwame Jantuah said.

The CPP politician said he will be delighted to have the Vice President speak on the E-Momo since his silence does not necessarily mean his approval.

“Am saying I want to hear his view on it. He is my Vice President; I want to hear his view on it. The fact that he is not saying anything does not mean that he is in agreement, it doesn’t mean. I d’ like to hear from him and I hope in the coming week he will say something”.

E-Levy

The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori Atta in its 2022 ‘The Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government of Ghana for the 2022 Financial Year” to Parliament  proposed  1.75 percent charge on all electronic transactions above ₵100 , something the Vice President has been speaking against prior to the proposal.

The levy has been vehemently opposed by Ghanaians but the Vice President is yet to speak about it.
