GPL Week 18 preview: Accra Lions seek to sink Sharks further in Elmina
Elmina Sharks currently appear firm favorites for relegation this season, as their torrid season continues.
They ultimately got themselves out of a similar position last season, but the task is harder this time around having picked up just 11 points in the first round of this season’s league.
Accra Lions will surely view this is an opportunity to sink Elmina Sharks further when the sides match up at Elmina in week 18 of the 21/22 Ghana Premier League season.
Preview: Elmina Sharks vs Accra Lions
While the fixture might not dominate headlines for the match week, its outcome has potential consequences for the outlook of the Premier League table.
While Elmina Sharks lie in last position, Accra Lions are just a couple of positions above in 15th place and are not entirely free from the relegation battle.
Accra Lions are in 15th position and just 1 and 2 points separate them and relegation threatened WAFA and Techiman Eleven Wonders respectively.
A win could thus help take them clear of that threat and ensure that they are on course to secure a safe position in their debut league season.
On the other hand, a defeat for Elmina Sharks could all but secure their return to the second tier of Ghana Football.
Form guide
Both sides come into the game after suffering defeats in their last game of the first round of the season.
Elmina Sharks lost 1-0 to Accra Great Olympics while Accra Lions were unable to stand the might of title favorites Kumasi Asante Kotoko as they were defeated 3-1.
A similar theme of defeat runs through the last five games of both teams.
Elmina Sharks have lost three of their last five games in the Premier League, drawing one and winning just once.
Four out of a possible points have thus been picked in the period under consideration.
Elmina Sharks’ only win in this run was against premium visitors, Kotoko and they defeated them 2-1 at the Nduom Sports Stadium.
Accra Lions have also suffered three defeats in their last 5 games and have won and drawn once in that period too.
