WR Minister calls for support to fight illegal mining at 66th Independence Day Celebration – Skyy Power FM

The Western Regional Minister Dr Kobby Okyere Darko-Mensah has called on the people in the region to support his administration in fighting the galamsey menace that continues to plague it.

He says Chiefs and people living near river banks and forest zones should report galamsey operators to stop them. He made these comments at the 66th Independence Day Anniversary celebration held at Gyandu Park in Sekondi.

Addressing the gathering, the Regional Minister also communicated that 6 out of the 12 district mining committees formalized by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources had been activated.

He said, ” Support us because this canker must stop, It is worth noting that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resource has formalised the small-scale mining sector, six out of the twelve mining committees, namely, Prestea Huni-Valley, Tarkwa Nsuaem, Wassa East, Wassa Amenfi East, Wassa Amenfi West and Wassa Amenfi Central have all been activated.”

According to Dr Okyere Darko Mensah, no cholera case has been recorded in the region since 2022 due to the practice of the COVID protocols and entreated all to continue practising them to keep themselves healthy.

He said, “It is pleasing to know that due to the practice of the Covid-19 protocols, no cholera case has been recorded in the region since 2022, we hope that you continue these protocols and keep your communities clean as well.”

He said to ensure food self-sufficiency in the Western Region, an agriculture value chain actors platform in all 14 MMDAs has been formed where actors meet both online and offline to do business.

In addition to that, the services of Abraham Odoom “the Rice Master “ that helped Nigeria in the production of local rice have been sought under the new project in the western region to enhance rice production using reclaimed lands from mining and all inland valleys.

Ghana gained independence from British colonial rulers on March 6, 1957.

The 6th of March is set aside each year to commemorate the country’s independence and take stock of the progress made.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose’.
