NPP Condemns NDC's Protest Against Electoral Commission as Unnecessary

Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its recent demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC), labelling it a “fruitless venture” and an “unnecessary move.”

During an interview on Yensempa on Onua FM, Nana Boakye emphasized the independence of the EC, which holds the legal authority to audit the voter register, rendering the NDC’s demand for an external audit redundant. “For me and the NPP, this is a fruitless venture. It is an unnecessary move,” he stated.

While acknowledging that errors can occur within the electoral process, he referred to a specific incident in Pusiga where unauthorized voter transfers led to the suspension of the presiding officer involved.

However, he questioned the NDC’s claims of over 200,000 illegal transfers, urging the party to provide concrete evidence to support such sweeping allegations. “Bring evidence; you say no. How can a political party behave in such a manner?” he asked.

Nana Boakye vowed that the NPP would vigorously oppose any attempts to undermine the EC’s independence.

He indicated that while the EC has the discretion to conduct its audits, he firmly rejected the NDC’s call for an external forensic audit, warning, “We will drag the EC to the Supreme Court if it attempts any forensic audit.”

The NDC organized a protest on September 17, attracting thousands of supporters from all 16 regions of Ghana.

The party is advocating for a forensic audit of the voters’ register before the 2024 elections, a demand that the EC has dismissed as unnecessary.

Critics have characterized the protest as premature, noting that the EC is cleaning the register following the mandatory public exhibition.
