Abusua reflects on Kumawood decline, fame challenges, and his return to electrical work
In a recent conversation with One Ghana TV, popular Kumawood actor Abusua shared insights into the current state of Kumawood and how he has had to adapt amidst the industry’s ongoing challenges.
Known for his witty roles that have captivated audiences across Ghana, Abusua’s journey reflects the resilience needed in the face of an industry in decline. Despite this downturn, he remains optimistic about Kumawood’s survival.
Kumawood, Ghana’s homegrown film industry, known for its Akan-language films and celebrated actors like Agya Koo, Nana Ama McBrown, and Lil Win, has faced steep hurdles in recent years.
Rising production costs, competition from foreign content, and the growing influence of digital streaming have made it difficult for the industry to keep up with past successes. Abusua, reflecting on this, shared, “The industry is not dead, but it’s undeniably struggling.” His statement echoes a shared sentiment among many actors and fans who cherish Kumawood’s unique cultural imprint.
In the face of these challenges, Abusua has turned back to his earlier trade as an electrician, a profession he had mastered before his career in acting took off. “I enjoy my work as an electrician, and I’m also a master of ceremonies for outdoor events,” he explained, underscoring his adaptability and dedication to earning an honest livelihood. However, balancing fame with regular work isn’t without its complications. “My celebrity status sometimes makes it hard to go about my work without drawing attention,” he admitted, highlighting the dual-edged sword of fame.
To maintain a sense of normalcy, Abusua even avoids some of his favourite local eateries to prevent attracting a crowd. “It’s not easy,” he shared, speaking to the financial and personal demands of sustaining his public image while handling the realities of everyday life. For Abusua, returning to his roots as an electrician is a humbling reminder of the hard work and skill he has always brought to his career, whether on or off the screen.
