Debris from the missing Titan sub has been found in the search site, a friend of the passengers says.
David Mearns tells the BBC a “landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible” were seen
A debris field was found on the seabed near the Titanic wreck, the US Coast Guard announced earlier.
The Coast Guard will hold a press conference at 15:00 local time (20:00bst) with more information.
Contact with the sub which has five people on board was lost on Sunday as it made a descent to the Titanic wreck.
Among them is Hamish Harding, a 59-year-old British billionaire businessman and explorer.
His family confirmed the news.
Mr Harding on social media at the weekend said he was “proud to finally announce” that he would be aboard the mission to the wreck of the Titanic but added that due to the “worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023”.
He wrote on Sunday: “A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow.”
