Academic activities will resume January 3 after TUTAG calls off strike

The leadership of the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has called off its strike that commenced on November 18, 2022.
The Association in a letter addressed to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and copied to the Minister of Education, Minister of Finance, Chairman of the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission expressed worry over the government’s failure to honour the Codified Conditions of Service of members, which have been in arrears since 2016.
But almost a month after staying off their duties, a statement jointly signed by the Association’s president and general secretary announced that they have reached a mutual understanding with the government for which reason they have resolved to call off the strike.
The statement, therefore, called on all members of the Association to resume work effective December 12.
The Secretary of TUTAG at the Takoradi Technical University, Dr Fredrick Boakye-Yiadom speaking to Skyy News said If the government has called off the strike, then academic activities must resume but before that, “Our staff are not aware so we will have to call a meeting to officially inform them about the development,” he said
“We wanted our members to support us with the strike action. We called for a meeting and we called the media as well and we gave them why it was important for us to go on strike.”
“So we felt it would be proper for us to call them tomorrow and break the news to them, although they are aware, we have to break the news to them and give them what the agreement we reached with the government then from there, we can ask them to come back to the classroom.”
He added that academic work will officially begin on January 3 when school reopens.
