Aggrieved residents of Wassa Akyempim stage demonstration against Golden Star Wassa Mining – Skyy Power FM

Over 600 aggrieved jobless residents, mostly youth of Wassa Akyempim in the Wassa East District of the Western Region have expressed their fed-up displeasure through a demonstration against Golden Star Wassa Mining Ltd on Wednesday, February 15.

According to reports, since the mining company was established at Wassa Akyempim a decade ago, the company has refused to employ residents. Additionally, they claim the majority of the residents are competent enough to fill the various vacancies in the company but are yet to be employed.

The company however employs people outside the Wassa Akyempim community which they describe as unfair recruitment.

Further reports indicate that the Akyempim community and the Golden Star Wassa Ltd have signed a Memorandum Of Understanding on employment but the company has failed to apply the M.O.U.

Residents lamented that Golden Star Wassa Mining Ltd has destroyed all their farmlands, and have acquired their houses and lands at affordable prices.

The community are now requesting 30 slots for permanent employment at Golden Star Wassa Mining Ltd.

As of the time of writing this report, the convenors of the demonstration, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Wassa East, Mr Ebenzer Boakye, Management of Golden Star Wassa Mining Ltd and officers from the Ghana Police Service were having a meeting to deliberate on the community’s request.
