In a year, Ghana imports 500 million dollars worth of rice. This information was provided by Western Regional Minister Kobby Okyere Darko Mensah during his tour of the Shama District.

He says the country has produced rice beyond our consumption and following President Akufo Addo’s announcement of the banning of some products, rice imports inclusive the Minister advised the people in the area to take advantage of this and grow rice because the Shama is the hub for rice production in the region.

He stated that the ban on rice importation takes effect in May of this year during his tour of some government projects in the Shama District.

“I think the ban on the importation of rice by the government will help us patronize our very local rice in the market. Western Region has a lot of land valleys, thus, a lot of places we can cultivate rice.

Our agenda is to plant rice where galamsayers have spoilt the land, being it clay pits, etc and other devastated lands in the region.

I deem it an honour to see such a young man like Roland being able to deliver this project, even on time and going to the extent of adding the removal of rice husk. I will urge every citizen to look nowhere else when it comes to the selection of the best rice in Ghana.”
