The Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Governance (CDD-Ghana), Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante has advised the Ejura Committee of Inquiry to get the family of the murdered social media activist, Ibrahim Muhammed, Kaaka Mucho to rescind their decision not to participate in the ongoing investigations into the brutalities which saw two dead and four others injured at Ejura to restore public confidence in their work.
According to him, the committee had made certain mistakes during it first week proceeding which had affected it image as far as the public was concerned and one of the ways to redeem it was bring back the family of the late activist.
He noted the social activist’s death was the route cause of the brutalities and the family’s input into the investigations was crucial to the committee’s work.
Dr Pumpuni Asante gave the advice on Big Issue aired on Citi TV on Saturday, July 10 monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
“I hope that the weekend will give the committee an opportunity to redeem itself and one of the ways I think is to do that is to get the family of Ibrahim Mohammed also known Kaaka to rescind their decision not to participate and to give them the assurance that is needed just to bring back public confidence in the committees work so far mistakes have made and there are still room and opportunity to redeem,” he said.
Ejura Committee Inquiry: We will not participate
The family of the late social activist and #FixTheCountry campaigner on July 8, In an eight point statement addressed to the Minister of Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, and copied the Chairman of the Committee said it would not participate in the public inquiry instituted by the Interior Minister on the instruction of the President to probe into the disturbances which claimed two lives and saw four persons injured at Ejura on the 29th of June
“We, the family of Ibrahim ‘Kaaka’ Mohammed, regret to formally notify you of our decision to not participate in the ongoing public inquisition, which is purportedly concerned with the “circumstances that led to the unfortunate occurrences of Tuesday, 29thJune 202,” the statement signed by the Spokesperson of the family, Nafiu Mohammed said.
The family’s reasons were among other things, the failure of government to institute a proper Commission of Inquiry, imprecise terms of reference of the Committee, the Committees stand on the media reportage on the murder of their relative and the attempt to blame the murder on the brother of the deceased.
They also noted the reference of the committee’s work do not relate to the circumstances which led to the death of their son, Kaaka Ibrahim hence their decision not to participate in the public inquiry ordered by the President.
“That, as we understand, the scope of the Committee’s terms of reference, however nebulous, does not relate to the circumstances that led to the Kaaka’s murder; or the circumstances that led to his burial. Rather that, it concerns directly, the circumstances that led to the deployment of the military to intimidate and indiscriminately shoot at a community that was grieving a loved one; and still trying to come to terms with the circumstances and motivations for his murder. In this connection, we the mother, wife, children, siblings and extended family of Kaaka are least competent to assist the Committee perform,” the statement said.
