Hundreds of passengers stranded in Takoradi after aggrieved transport owners embarked on a strike

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded at the Accra Station in Takoradi after some aggrieved transport operators embarked on a strike.

The aggrieved transport owners embarked on a sit-down strike this morning, September 15, 2022, as part of measures to compel the STMA to revoke the permit issued to Bimbisala Cooperative.

Passengers who are travelling from Takoradi to Accra and Kumasi were stranded at the station as they have not been able to get a bus to their destination.

The strike was planned today because it was scheduled for Bimbisala Cooperative to start operation at the Accra station today but was further prevented by the aggrieved transport operators from transporting passengers.

The presence of Chief Superintendent Isaac Sorkpah, Regional MTTD Commander and MCE, Abdul Issah Mumin could not yield any positive results as all transport operators were directed to exit the station with immediate effect.

Addressing the media on Monday at the Metro Mass Transit terminal Mr David Tei Tekutey who is the regional manager for (MMTL) said “there have been various attempts to forcefully allow Bimbisala/VIP Jeoun to operate at the already congested terminal. The latest of such attempts was during a meeting on September 7 2022 held at the office of the Regional Police Command with us the aggrieved transport operators to allow Bimbisala/VIP Jeoun to operate from the already congested terminal, with the claim that the permit issued by the STMA cannot be revoked.”

The group says the STMA has refused to heed their concerns after a series of meetings and press conferences organized.

According to the leadership of the aggrieved transport operators, the decision holds until the STMA is ready to reach a consensus with them.
