IGP interacts with commercial drivers in Takoradi concerning their operations and road accidents
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Goerge Akuffo Dampare and some Police Management Board members are touring the Western Region, with support from the Regional Command.
From meeting people in Ghana’s creative industry in Accra, he has jetted into the Western Region for a two-day official visit to the region, with his first point of call being the Accra Station in Takoradi, where he has had a historic encounter with drivers in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.
We are all aware that we are confronted with a peculiar year in that we have escalating road safety problem that is confronting all of us.
Briefing the press on the visit, Supt Alexander Obeng, Head of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, said some members of the top Police hierarchy have come to tour the Western Region to acquaint themselves with issues on the ground and to Foster a deeper collaboration between themselves and the public.
He said further that the encounter with the drivers is to help find lasting ways to reduce the increasing Carnage on Ghana’s roads.
Supt Obeng said, “Between January and October, we registered over 13,244 road crashes involving all categories of vehicles. It has impacted life, so far, morbidity stands at 2,380 involving all manner of road users.
It is so pathetic, unacceptable and so worrying to all of us. And this has caught the attention of the administration, which is why, as part of this tour, we have taken it upon ourselves that right from the point of entry into the region, we will first meet commercial transport drivers to interact with them on road traffic management.”
