I’m ever ready to rehabilitate Sekondi market if given green light – Lawyer Blay – Skyy Power FM
The state of the Sekondi Market which is over a hundred years has left traders worried.
The market is said to have not undergone any rehabilitation over the years leaving the roofing in a sorry state.
This situation the market women described as challenging because whenever it rains, they get drenched with their goods.
Even though there have been countless pleas from the traders to the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to help, all efforts seem to have proven futile.
In an attempt by the NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sekondi, Lawyer Blay Armah to fix the dilapidated roofing of the market, there have been reports that the assembly has been a hindrance to this aid.
Lawyer Blay Armah speaking to Naomi Afriyie Nyanor on the Jolly Breakfast show said, indeed the speculations are true because he made an effort to collaborate with the STMA but there has been a hindrance.
According to him, the market women made a request at a program that was organized in Sekondi and he promised them that he will grant their request for them, “the approach was at a program that was organized in Sekondi. The organizers even invited the MP and the Mayor but they did not come. It was only the MP’s PRO who came, that was when one woman came with the request. I assured them that when I win my primaries I will have it done for them”, Lawyer Blay told Naomi Afriyie Nyanor.
He further made it known that the concerns of the market women were mainly on the roofing which he is willing to cater for but the assembly told him plans are underway to reconstruct the market so even if he rehabilitates the roof, it won’t last, “we were much concerned about the possible ways of finding a solution to the problem of the market women which was mainly about the roof. They even told us that, the washroom in the market is also not well but they pay taxes”.
Lawyer Blay when asked what he plans to do after facing all these hindrances, said he is ever willing to help with the rehabilitation of the Sekondi Market but he will wait for feedback from the assembly after sending their people there, “I told them that if I do it today and the women will feel comfortable for them to demolish it tomorrow, it will not bother me. With that, I will know I’ve done something humane for humanity. But what they told me is that they will visit the market with their technical team to do a full assessment, that’s the feedback I’m waiting for”, he added.
The Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, John Last in his response indicated that they are always willing to work with individuals for the benefit of the metropolis but in this case, they wish Lawyer Blay Armah formerly puts his plans on paper per the regulations of the assembly.
