Lands destroyed by illegal mining in Western Region will be reclaimed and turned into farmlands
Farming as a profession has not attracted enough Ghanaian youth because of the mindset of being a less lucrative and difficult process.
There have been campaigns to get the youth on board with the farming business but are yet to yield the expected results by getting the attention of the majority.
Mr Abraham Dwuma Odoom, former Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa who was a policy advisor, provided technical support and direction towards Nigeria’s success of a single largest rice pyramids ever assembled spoke on the Jolly Breakfast Show on Skyy Power 93.5FM on Tuesday, November 1.
According to him, the reason farming is not attractive to the youth is because of the orthodox approach to farming in Ghana.
Because of this reason, he is engaging youth in the national service program who are interested in farming to be trained and apply modern methods to their activity.
“He said, We are using modern methods, and the youth who are interested will be trained and given lands with seeds so they can start farming as their profession.”
Mr Odoom further indicated that one advantage they are taking is reclaiming lands destroyed by illegal mining and turning them into farmlands.
He explained that he met the Western Regional Minister, Dr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah and his team to plan this approach and its execution.
He said, “All lands in the Western Region destroyed by illegal mining are being reclaimed and turned into farmlands, it’s not an easy process because there are some chemicals in the soil that we need to extract before plants can grow on such a land.”
He indicated that the necessary agencies have been contacted and are looking forward to contacting the World Bank on this project which he believes they will support.
