Vida Essel-LampteyA member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Communication team,Mr Denis Miracle Aboagye has blamed the perennial flooding situations in the country on the affluent in society.
That he said was because while government work tirelessly to find lasting solutions to the flooding situations in the country they were busy building with impunity.
Speaking on TV3 NewDay on Monday, June 28 monitored by GhanaPlus.com, he said “Whiles government is working at these things, while government is building19k draining system, re-engineering, putting up all the authority to trying to make sure that they get the right mandate to do all of these things, Bella, the citizenry, the rich people in our society, the affluence, those who are able to get money and they are building, they are the ones who are killing us”.
Flooding in Kumasi claims 7 lives, 11-year old boy missing
Mr Aboagye’s comment was in reaction to the flooding situation which occurred in the Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi over the weekend.
The flood which was as a result of late Saturday afternoon downpour washed away 7persons including a one-year old.
An 11-year old boy is also reported missing following the rains which had caused havoc to lives and properties in and around the Kumasi and its environs.
Address perennial flooding is a collective responsibility
According to him, addressing the perennial flooding challenges confronting the country requires a collective effort from both the government and citizenry and insisted the people were building on water ways despite it adverse effect on lives.
“It is important that as a people we work together to solve this problem, they are building in water ways Bella….. Yes government must check them, the local authority must check them, that is understandable but people go for permit …..they come for permit to go and build here, they start building you go and check on them one, two, three, you see that yes they are putting it up the way they are suppose to put it up and then you leave by the time you come back in about eight to nine month, they have built in water ways………”.
He indicated the government and its agencies have an important role to play in addressing the development, however, the citizenry have a greater responsibility to ensure they do the right thing even when no one was watching them adding the authorities cannot check up all the time.
“Government has a responsibility, local authority has responsibility and a role to play I this but come on, you are building on water way that is going to have an effect on thousands of lives and government have not come and check on you so you are still building? ” he bemoan.
