Prof Gyampo describes as hypocritical public outcry over Ashaiman military brutalities

A Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana (Legon), Prof Ransford Gyampo has described as hypocritical public outcry over the military brutality recorded at Ashaiman over the murder of 21-year-old soldier, Imoro Sherif.

Imoro, a member of the Ghana Armed Forces band was stabbed to dead by unknown men in Ashaiman, Taifa on March 4, while visiting his family in the area.

Innocent men, women and children were round up at about 4:am, amidst the heavy downpour on Tuesday morning beaten, canned,  torture and brutally assaulted over the murder of the young soldier.

Report said they were made to sleep, roll in flood waters and some allegedly made to drink from water fetched from gutters.

It is hypocritical to say the dead is dead, he has no right again – Prof Gyampo

But speaking on TV3’s TheKeyPoint on Saturday, March 11, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, Prof Gyampo said the outcry is insincere.

He said “Somebody has been murdered, the person has got parents. The person has got well-wishers. The right to life is inalienable, we have alienated that person from his right to life and no one is commiserating with the family. Human right are human right but you see, there are even categorization, that is why we say life is inalienable”.

“Somebody have been alienated from his right, now all of a sudden, we the people in the society, we are not even commiserating with the family of the one who have been killed but we are commiserating with those whom some minimal force have been exercise”.

“So am saying that it is hypocritical to say that the one who is dead is dead, he has no right again, we are not commiserating with the family but we are all of a sudden showing a certain empathy and promoting and talking of the human right of other people who am sure, some of whom may be privy to information of who did what happened, all of a sudden, we believe in their right and we are extolling that right”.

Prof Gyampo is of the view, it would only be fair the public criticizing the military over the invasion could speak the same language if their relatives happened to be the one murdered like the young soldier.
