Legal practitioner and law lecturer at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) Accra, Mr Justice Abdulai has said there is an element of criminality in the double identity being held by the founder of the Power Chapel Worldwide, Rev Victor Kusi Boateng.
According to him, all though it is normal to have multiple names in Ghana, its laws identifies only one legally registered name at a time.
Even in the case of identity change, the new one nullify the old one.
“Now remember it is the birth certificate that you use to acquire all other national recognized identities, whether passport, whether others voters ID card and now Ghana card, all these rely blissfully on your birth certificate. Of cause there is no law banning anyone from changing his official name but if you have not change your official name and you are still using the official name indicated on your birth certificate then you are expected to have only that one on all your nationally recognized ID cards,” Justice Abdulai explained.
“So it is inconceivable that you are officially known as Rolland Walker but you still have ID bearing Kweku Rolland that is your domestic name if you want to call it so or Kweku Abdulai which is the name you are called back at home. Now the moment you have that name on all official documents and your official name on all other official identity, clearly there is a criminal element involved because you couldn’t have obtain double identity”.
The renowned legal practitioner said “Your identity is your legally recognized details of your personality as known and recognized by the law and that what the nation know you to be notwithstanding all the other names you are known to be back at home or back in school”.
Justice Abdulai was speaking on TV3 NewDay on Wednesday, January 18, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
He made the comment when reacting to the multiple identity allegations made by the Member of Parliament of the North Tongu Constituency, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa against, Rev Kusi Boateng, who is also the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral.
Justice Abdulai further explained “……And so if you have your officially recognized name tallying with your identity and you have other names also having other identities ie so the Kweku Rolland has passport, it has birth certificate , it has all other details the two are completely different people”.
“They refer to different people notwithstanding the fact that they have the same pictures and the same other biometric details, they cannot be the same person particularly, in the particular case that we hearing even date of birth are different, they your are talking completely about two different personalities, they cannot be one and the same and the moment you enter into that era criminality gets involved and automatically……. clearly you couldn’t have obtain two different passports with the same birth certificate,” he emphasized.
