Revenue for Sekondi projects will come from E-levy
The Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency, Lawyer Egyapa Mercer is saddened by the event that took place at Parliament during the E-levy voting on Monday, December 20.
This comes after confusion broke out in Parliament when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority prevented the first Deputy Speaker Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, sitting as Speaker, from casting his vote.
This led to the adjournment of proceedings to 0900 hours on Tuesday, December 21.
The vote was to determine whether or not the House should adopt the Electronic Transfer Levy Bill 2021 (E-Levy) Motion for deliberation.
As the NDC Minority and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Majority members engaged in the brawl, the First Deputy Speaker left the Chamber.
According to him, he is saddened by the turn of events and weeps in his heart as to why the minority is doing everything in their power to reject such a good initiative.
Lawyer Mercer speaking on Skyy Power 93.5FM on Tuesday, December 21, indicated that even though paying taxes is something not pleasurable, E-levy is a good initiative that Ghanaians should accept because it will help generate enough revenue for developments that the country is lacking.
Also, one of the reasons he is eager for the E-levy to be accepted is that, it will generate revenue for the construction of proposed projects in Sekondi, such as the redevelopment of the Sekondi Market.
He said, “I know the need of my constituents in Sekondi, the redevelopment of the market has been captured in the budget and they want it. If the government will have to do it, they will need money and so I will support any means for the government to raise revenue to provide development.”
“They need money to pay contractors to work on the Kweikuma road, my constituents need development and the E-levy will be a game-changer in Ghana”
