The invasion of a seaweed called Sargassum along the West Coast of Ghana is threatening fishing activities and crippling the local economy.
This was in a petition issued and signed by the leader of the Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group and Convener of the Committee of Concerned Citizens of Nzema, Madam Elizabeth Allua Vaah to the Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah.
Speaking to the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ellembelle, Mr Kwesi Bonso revealed that the invasion of the seaweeds along the West Coast of Ghana that initially residents thought was a result of the operations of oil companies have been proved to be untrue by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
According to the GNPC, the seaweeds on the west coast emerged from the Caribbean seas and spread to this part of the country.
These seaweeds appear almost every year on the West Coast but this particular year the seaweeds that came on the coast was too much” he said.
He also advised residents that since the stench that comes when the seaweeds rot is unbearable, the GNPC is finding solutions to dispose it off scientifically so residents can have patience.
