Some women in Sekondi are ‘ditching’ their husbands for lucrative sex business

The lucrative sex business in the Sekondi, the twin city of Takoradi in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has found its way into some households.
The influence of the business has not only affected young teenage girls but some married women as well to the intent of them leaving their husbands to join the lucrative sex cult.
Sekondi, a fishing town is now notoriously known as a hub for prostitutes as they continue to widen their territory in the township.
A through and through resident of Sekondi, living at the Sekondi Rail Way Station which is now the location of these sex workers and where all kinds of illicit activities take place gave Skyy Power 93.5FM journalists who went to the location some detailed information.
Speaking to us, she was appalled by the development and how their children are been exposed to these acts of sex, drugs and violence.
Although that was not the issue some few years ago, she is astonished by how the activity has gained a concrete foundation in the township, leading to the establishment of hundreds of drinking bars and motels.
However, most of these females who are in the business are mostly foreigners with Nigerians dominating, followed by Liberians, other foreign internationals and Ghanaians.
According to her, a majority of the foreigners are trafficked into the country by a sex trafficking ring at a fee which they have to work on arrival to be able to pay back the money.
Teenagers as young as 10 years old can be seen at the Sekondi Railway Station and other hotspot locations, selling their bodies to men for money.
Speaking further, the wave of the prostitution business has blown further to some households, influencing married women to call for divorce or leave their husbands without any explanation to sell their bodies for money.
She said, “The Sekondi Railway Station where the sex workers base is a path for us that leads to many places, some of us use to our church, there is also a market there where we sell and even to visit our families.
“Whenever we are passing, men will be calling us, asking how much money we will take for a short period of sex. They don’t care about your appearance, the moment they see you walking there, they will think you are one of the sex workers”
“With some women knowing this, even though they are not sex workers, they will fall victim when they are called by men because maybe at that moment they will be in need of money, which will now be continuous.”
According to the resident who spoke to Skyy Power FM, she knows a number of married women have fallen victim to this because of the easy way of making money to the extent of divorcing or leaving their husbands for full-time sex work.
Moreover, she is not happy with the development and wishes the Sekondi-Takoradi authorities will intervene and help the community by demolishing their settlement which is illegal and further banish these women from the town.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Mr John Last said it is rather unfortunate that an act of such nature is happening in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
However, STMA is aware of the development and is taking steps to clear the area by demolishing their structures and banishing these females from the community forever.
