STMA presents 180 fruit seedlings to 2nd Battalion Infantry in Takoradi

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has presented a total of 180 fruit tree seedlings to the second battalion infantry of the Ghana Armed Forces at Apremdo near Kwesimintsim.

This was done through the European Union-funded projects dubbed Twin Cities in a sustainable partnership which is being implemented by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly and Palermo in Italy.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the (STMA) Abdul Mumin Issah said the metropolis is planting fruit trees as part of the project to support the government’s green Ghana agenda to address environmental degradation, ensure food security and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on livelihoods at community levels.
He said about 5000 fruit trees will be planted and nurtured throughout the metropolis this year,
while additional 5000 seedlings will be planted next year.
He says so far, almost all the tertiary institutions and some selected institutions have planted fruit trees and this will be continued to sustain the environment and food security.
Abdul Mumin Issah said fruits are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals with high fibre content and they provide a wide range of health-boosting antioxidants.
He added that eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables can reduce people’s risk of developing heart disease, cancer, inflammation and diabetes.
The commanding officer of 2BN, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Atobrah Bondah said the military is an integral part of the community and should never be left out in the developmental agenda of the nation.
He said as security personnel they are not only to see to the security of the country but also environmental security plays a major part in the survival of the human race so people must not limit their duty and responsibility to only the protection of lives and property.
