We need peace, development not war – Warmongers told
The overlord of Dagbon, Nadan-Yaa-Naa Bukari II, has said the Northern Region is in dire need of peace and development and urged for peaceful coexistence between Konkombas and Dagombas in the Region.
His call comes on the heels of the alleged growing tension between the Konkombas and Dagombas in the region which is believed to be sparked by the menace of social media commentators of both tribes.
The Overlord made this passionate appeal in Yendi at the Gbewa Palace on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, when the delegation from the Presidency comprising the National security minister, Defense Minister, National security advisor, and some members of parliament from the Region paid a curtsy call on him and with the aim to obtain first-hand information on the situation.
He entreated both Konkombas and Dagombas to give peace a chance and protect the region and ensure development for the complete eradication of poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition, maternal and child mortality; hence those were the common enemy that all strengths and resources should channeled to fight against.
The Overlord also encouraged the National security minister and the security agencies to make sure that all the individuals who are operating certain social media handles and spewing hate speeches are apprehended.
A delegation led by the Minister of Religious, Chieftaincy, and Traditional Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, vowed to ensure that all the unknown individuals and promoters of hate speech on social media causing the tension are fished out and dealt with.
For his part, the Minister of Defense, Dominic Nitiwul, assured the Overlord of adequate security adding that intelligence gathered indicates that no Konkomba or Dagomba had the intention of going for war.
He attributed the recent tension to persons using faceless Facebook accounts on various social media platforms spewing hate speeches.
Mr Dominic faults security agencies and other authorities for their inability to fulfill promises made times back at Gbewa palace of arresting all persons using faceless social media handles to nab their activities in the bud.
He assured Yaa-Naa of maximum peace and promised their commitment to sensitizing the social media and appealed to everyone to report anyone behind such accounts to the appropriate quarters for punishment.
It had been alleged on social media that the Dagombas and konkombas plotted to fight in the region causing fear and panic to both Konkombas and Dagombas in the local communities.
However, deadlines for both parties’ social media netizens gave had elapsed and the situation placed security in the part of the country on high alert.
The social media rumors compelled residents of Sunson, a suburb of Yendi Municipality flee to Yendi to seek cover and protection and the same had been replicated where Konkombas in Dagbon communities also fled for their dear lives.
