Convener for the FixTheCountry campaign and legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has offered to defend the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Frimpong-Boateng in the defamation case filed against him by the New Patriotic Party stalwart, Gabby Otchere Darko at no cost.
Mr Barker-Vormawor said Prof Frimpong-Boateng, a Ghanaian physician, cardiothoracic surgeon and founder of Ghana’s National Cardiothoracic Center saved his little brother who had a heart problem at birth hence his decision to defend the minister at no cost.
He made the comment in a Facebook post sighted by GhanaPlus.com.
“My little Brother was born with a hole in heart. He was operated on at 6months old at the Cardiothoracic Centre Professor Frimpong-Boateng established” .
“I was in Primary school at the time. One day while my brother was on admission, I walked to the Ghana Commercial Bank and handed them my lunch money. I wanted to deposit it in the Cardio Fund which used to be advertised on TV. I remember the cashiers pinching my cheeks and so impressed. They had no idea the trauma in my life at the time,” Mr Barker-Vormawor wrote.
“Professor Frimpong-Boateng saved my brother’s life,”.
“If he needs me to represent him in this defamation suit Gabby Otchere-Darko has brought against him, I will do it for free,” he added.
Gabby Otchere-Darko sues Frimpong-Boateng for defamation
Prof Frimpong-Boateng is facing a GH₵10million defamation suit filed by Mr Otchere-Darko following an accusation made against him in his 39 page galamsey report which came public days ago.
The report which had been with the presidency since 2021 accused Mr. Otchere-Darko of interfering in the work of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) which he (Prof. Frimpong-Boateng) chaired.
The report also accused many government officials of engaging in illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.
However, Mr Otchere-Darko in an interview with Citi TV/Citi said the former Minister’s accusations are a wrongful twist of facts for reasons best known to him.
“Their jobs [clients] were being frustrated, and I had before me all the documents they were required to have. They were doing legitimate mining, and they were being frustrated. That is why I placed the call to understand why that was happening to them. I’m very disappointed in the former Minister deliberately twisting an enquiry by a lawyer of a client’s issue to be an interference,” Citinewsroom reported him to have said.
He has therefore, file a GH₵10million suit against the former Minister.
Mr Otchere-Darko is also demanding “An apology for and retraction of the words complained of and the particularized supra. A perpetual injunction restraining the defendant whether by himself, his servants, agents or assigns from repeating similar or other defamatory words against the plaintiff,” as part of his relief.
