Bawumia’s ‘We’ Rhetoric Shows Shared Responsibility – Campaign Manager

Frederick Opare-Ansah, campaign manager for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 presidential bid, has addressed criticisms regarding his candidate’s acknowledgment of the current administration’s shortcomings. During a Citi Prime News interview, Opare-Ansah emphasized that Bawumia’s consistent use of “we” in speeches demonstrates his acceptance of collective accountability for the government’s performance.
“Throughout his engagements, Dr. Bawumia has deliberately used inclusive language,” Opare-Ansah noted. “Our own internal research, including grassroots consultations, confirmed that citizens felt unheard on key issues like the E-levy and cabinet reshuffles.” The campaign manager stressed this linguistic choice reflects an unusual political candor rather than evasion of responsibility.
The remarks come as Bawumia seeks to distinguish his presidential vision from the mixed legacy of the Akufo-Addo administration. Opare-Ansah framed this approach as politically courageous, particularly when addressing polarizing policies like the electronic transactions tax. “He’s telling voters, ‘We implemented this despite your objections,’ which isn’t typical political rhetoric,” he observed.
Political analysts suggest this strategy attempts to balance continuity with reform messaging ahead of December’s elections. By acknowledging discontent while emphasizing team governance, Bawumia appears to be walking a delicate line between defending the administration’s record and positioning himself as responsive to public sentiment.
