Bryan Acheampong Seeks Former MMDCE Backing for NPP Leadership

Abetifi Member of Parliament Bryan Acheampong has appealed to former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to support his bid to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.
Acheampong made the call during a meeting with the former appointees in Kwahu, positioning himself as the candidate to lead the party to victory in the 2028 general election.
The legislator described the 2028 election as essential for the NPP to win. He told the gathering that under his leadership, the party could unseat the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). “I will not win, we will win and if there are any spoils, we will share for the benefit of our party and our country,” Acheampong stated, directly addressing the former MMDCEs. “That is my invitation to MMDCEs. If you do it, we will hear; if you don’t do it we will hear.”
Acheampong pledged loyalty to potential supporters. “I don’t leave my men behind; I don’t leave my people behind,” he remarked. He also referenced the party’s succession plan, adding, “If I win today, it is Bawumia who will hand over to me.”
The NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has scheduled the flagbearer election for January 31, 2026. The party aims to select a leader who can unify the party and guide it through to the 2028 polls. However, this timeline has drawn criticism from significant party stakeholders who describe the early 2026 date as potentially detrimental to the party’s cohesion. These critics argue the timing could create internal discord.
The selection process occurs amid ongoing debate within the NPP regarding the optimal timing for its leadership transition ahead of the crucial 2028 contest.
