The Electoral Commissioner of Ghana, Ms Jane Mensah has declared the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Flagbearer , John Dramani Mahama winner of the December 7, 2024 general elections and President-elect of Ghana
The win gives Mr Mahama, a former President of the country, another four year mandate to govern the country which he ruled from June 2011 to 2012 after the death of Mr John Evans Atta Mills under whom he served as the Vice President of Ghana.
Mr Mahama was elected in 2012 after serving the remaining tenure of the late Atta Mills but lost to the NPP’s Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his second attempt at the presidency on 2016.
Mahama pulled 56.55%
Declaring the result on Monday, December 9, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, Ms Mensah said Mr Mahama pulled a total of Six Million , Three Hundred and Twenty Eight Thousand Three Hundred and Ninety Seven (6,328,397) votes representing 56.55% beat to his major contender, Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The results, however, excluded results from nine constituencies out of the total 276 constituencies across the country.
” …..That not withstanding the presidential results from the 267 constituencies including the newly created Guan constituency clearly establish the winner of the 2024 presidential election. Simply put even if all the votes from the nine constituencies were added to the candidate who place second, it will not change the outcome of the election, ” Ms Mensah said.
“Ladies and gentlemen i have the singular honour as the returning officer of the 2024 election to declare his Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 election and the President-elect of Ghana with a total percentage of 56.55%. Congratulations Sir, it is finish, Ms Mensah said.
Dr Buwumia garnered a total vote of Four Million, Six Hundred and Fifty Seven Thousand, Three Hundred and four (4, 657304) votes represent 41.61%.
Bawumia concede to defeat
Earlier on Sunday, December 8, Mr Bawumia conceded defeat and congratulated Mr Mahama on his win.
“………..Let me say that the data from our own internal collation of the election results indicate that former President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has won the presidential election decisively”.
The NDC has also won the parliamentary election, even though we await final collation for a number of seats. However, I believe ultimately that these will not change the overall outcome. I have just called his excellency John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-Elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Dr Bawumia said.
Mr Bawumia assured Mr Mahama of his support in the transition process and his government.
“I assure His Excellency John Dramani Mahama of my full support in the transition process. As committed Democrats, we pledge to ensure that we have a very smooth transition so that the business of government will continue seamlessly,” he assured.
“The NPP would offer the needed support to the new government in a very responsible way. Ladies and gentlemen, we have conceded defeat like any consumer Democrat would do, but we have not abandoned the fight to transform Ghana and expand opportunities to all sections of our society. We will not be a disruptive opposition, even though we would subject government actions and policies to strict scrutiny in the interest of our beloved nation,” Dr Bawumia added.
