Former Minister Condemns Political Protection of Offensive Remarks
Ex-Deputy Health Minister Alexander Abban has slammed Ghana’s political establishment for shielding inflammatory conduct, warning such practices undermine the rule of law.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum Saturday, Abban reacted to recent arrests of social commentators Sir Obama-Pokuase, Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, and activist Fante Comedy over offensive statements.
“The politicians are quick to rise to the defence of irresponsible talk to keep their party bases loyal,” Abban declared. “We must stop glorifying nonsense and let people see crime as crime.”
He argued both ruling and opposition parties routinely politicize criminal acts, turning serious matters into partisan battles. When arrests occur, supporters often rally behind accused figures without examining the allegations.
Abban warned this cycle encourages others to push boundaries, knowing parties will protect them. “In Ghana, if you want your case dismissed quickly, just politicize it,” he remarked bluntly.
He urged leaders to allow impartial legal proceedings and demanded governments discipline their own members who cross lines. “Those in power must stop shielding offenders and bring them to book,” he insisted, stressing that selective accountability erodes public trust in institutions.
