Gabby Otchere-Darko Challenges Nkrumah’s Sole Founder Status in Ghana

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure, has questioned the widely accepted notion that Dr Kwame Nkrumah was the sole founder of Ghana.

While acknowledging Nkrumah’s crucial role in the country’s independence movement, Otchere-Darko argues that Ghana’s freedom should be credited to a broader collective effort.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s “Face to Face,” Otchere-Darko contended that the struggle for independence began before Nkrumah’s prominent involvement, citing the significant contributions of figures such as J.B. Danquah, Paa Grant, and other members of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).

He emphasized that Ghana’s independence was achieved through the combined efforts of many individuals, highlighting the inclusivity of the narrative.

“Nkrumah undoubtedly had a unique ability to energize and mobilize people, but he was not the only architect of Ghana’s freedom.

The movement started well before his time with contributions from others like Danquah and Grant,” Otchere-Darko stated.

He also noted that Nkrumah did not choose the name ‘Ghana’ himself, suggesting that this decision was made by others involved in the independence movement. This implies that the identity of Ghana, as represented by its name, was a collective decision rather than a singular act by Nkrumah.

“Nkrumah’s role was significant, but he was part of a broader collective effort,” he added.

Otchere-Darko acknowledged the ongoing debate about Nkrumah’s role and maintained that while he respects Nkrumah’s contributions as a mobilizer and leader, he disagrees with the view that Nkrumah was the sole founder of Ghana, ensuring the audience feels the fairness in the argument.

“If people believe that Nkrumah founded Ghana alone, that is their prerogative.

However, those of us who recognize the collective efforts of others will continue to honour Nkrumah for his significant role while also acknowledging the contributions of others,” he said.

Otchere-Darko’s remarks follow President Akufo-Addo’s comments during his 2024 Founders’ Day address, where the President rejected the notion of a single founder of Ghana.

This statement sparked varied reactions among Ghanaians, with some supporting the President’s view and others vehemently defending Nkrumah’s sole founder status.
