Kwesi Pratt Dismisses Opposition Economic Criticism as “Political Jabs”
Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jr. has rejected opposition critiques of Ghana’s economic management under President Mahama, labelling them “factually baseless political jabs” during an appearance on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana. Pratt systematically countered three key opposition arguments:
On Ghana’s $11.12 billion international reserves, Pratt noted critics concede the figure’s accuracy but dispute credit attribution: “This isn’t about lies—it’s a political contest over ownership.” Regarding claims of a “Dumsor levy” inflating fuel prices, he highlighted current prices are lower than January levels: “What’s the substance of this argument?”
Pratt defended Bank of Ghana’s forex interventions as standard global practice: “Currency stabilization isn’t manipulation; it’s responsible policy.” He similarly dismissed debt-ratio skepticism, stressing the 43.8% debt-to-GDP reduction is uncontested—only its origins are debated. “Opposition admits the drop but credits past restructuring. Again, this is about political credit, not data credibility.”
Concluding, Pratt urged evidence-based analysis: “Ghanaians must scrutinize arguments beyond headlines.”
