Legal Experts Clash Over Ofori-Atta Accountability Process

Ghana’s accountability mechanisms face a critical test as legal authorities disagree on how to proceed with investigations into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Private lawyer Martin Kpebu has urged the Office of the Special Prosecutor to advance court proceedings regardless of Ofori-Atta’s medical treatment in the United States, suggesting international testimony collection if necessary.
The debate intensified as University of Ghana Professor Ransford Gyampo questioned whether authorities have verified Ofori-Atta’s presence at the Mayo Clinic, while political analyst Dr. Joshua Zaato proposed passport tracking by National Security.
Ofori-Atta’s wife maintains the former minister remains willing to cooperate remotely during his cancer treatment, having offered video testimony that investigators declined.
This standoff emerges as the OSP examines five high-profile cases from Ofori-Atta’s tenure, including controversial expenditures on the National Cathedral and ambulance procurement contracts.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between enforcing accountability and respecting due process rights in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
