Low Turnout Observed in Voters’ Register Exhibition Exercise Amid Growing Concerns
Despite the critical role of the Voters’ register exhibition exercise, recent reports indicate a disappointing turnout at many centres across the country.
The exercise concluded on August 27 and aimed to allow voters to verify and update their information before the December 7 general election.
At the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, the turnout was notably low.
Only a few voters participated in the La Nkwantanang Cluster of schools, which featured ten exhibition areas.
Polling official Cecil Fornyikpor remarked that this year’s turnout was markedly lower than previous years.
“I have been a polling official for several years, and typically, the turnout for voter verification was quite encouraging.
This year’s turnout, however, has been significantly reduced,” Fornyikpor said.
Similarly, the Madina No. 1 Cluster of schools experienced a sparse turnout. Polling official Agnes Domoh attributed this decline to several factors, including introducing a new verification code for voters and insufficient publicity.
She also noted that the availability of online verification options might have impacted physical attendance.
One eligible voter, Alexander Ativie, reported that despite initial issues with his registration, the verification process clarified his details during the exercise.
The exhibition exercise, held from August 20 to August 27, was designed to allow voters to ensure their information was accurate and up-to-date in preparation for the upcoming elections.
The low participation raises concerns about voter apathy and potential implications for voter engagement in future elections.
