NDC Chairman Proposes Attorney General Role Be Non-Political

NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia has called for separating Ghana’s Attorney General’s Office from the Ministry of Justice to ensure independent prosecution of corruption cases.
Speaking at the African Governance and Anti-Corruption Summit on June 25, 2025, Nketia argued the dual role creates conflicts of interest.
The ruling party chairman stated a non-political Attorney General should replace the current structure. He proposed establishing a career-focused position, insulated from party influence and appointed like judges. According to Nketia, this would enable unbiased prosecution of government officials implicated in graft.
Nketia emphasized that merging the roles undermines anti-corruption efforts. “An Attorney General must undertake prosecutorial duties without favor,” he declared at the University of Ghana event. His remarks signal internal pressure on President Mahama’s NDC administration to pursue institutional reforms.
The summit’s theme, “Breaking the chains of corruption,” aligned with Nketia’s push for structural changes. Ghana’s constitution currently combines ministerial and prosecutorial powers under one officeholder. Critics have long argued this arrangement shields ruling-party allies from accountability.
The proposal comes amid Transparency International’s 2024 ranking of Ghana 73rd globally in corruption perception. No formal government response has been issued yet.
