NDC Holds Primary Today for Ayawaso East By-Election Candidate
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will elect its candidate for the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election today, Saturday, February 7, 2026, with over 1,100 delegates expected to cast ballots at the Nima Cluster of Schools.
Five aspirants are competing for the party’s ticket ahead of the March 3, 2026 by-election, with voting scheduled to commence at 9:00 am and conclude at 4:00 pm. The Ghana Police Service will manage security, while the Electoral Commission (EC) will supervise the election.
The aspirants appear on the ballot in the following order: Mohammed Ramne, Ayawaso East Constituency Chairman; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament (MP); Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Dr Yakubu Azindow, political scientist; and Najib Mohammed Sani.
A poll by Global InfoAnalytics shows 58 percent of NDC delegates in the constituency support Hajia Amina Adam, while 32 percent favour Baba Jamal. Dr Yakubu Azindow and Najib Mohammed Sani received five percent and three percent respectively in the survey.
The poll also indicates the NDC is well positioned to retain the seat in the main by-election. According to the survey, Hajia Amina Adams leads the New Patriotic Party’s Baba Ali with 73 percent of voter support, while Baba Jamal secures 67 percent against Baba Ali’s 33 percent in a separate matchup. The findings were disclosed by Global InfoAnalytics Executive Director Mussa Dankwah on Thursday, February 5.
Some constituents have questioned the reliability of the Global InfoAnalytics poll, arguing that political dynamics in Ayawaso East differ from those in other constituencies across the country.
The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of Mahama Naser Toure on Sunday, January 4, 2026, after a period of illness at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. He was buried on Monday, January 6, 2026, at the Madina Cemetery in Accra, in line with Islamic practices.
The NDC set a filing fee of GH¢40,000 for aspirants, with the nomination form costing GH¢5,000, while granting a 50 percent concession on the filing fee for female aspirants and persons living with disabilities. All payments were required to be made directly into the party’s designated UMB account at the Adabraka branch.
Six people initially picked nomination forms, but Abdul Salaam Daru withdrew from the contest to support Hajia Amina Adam, leaving five candidates to proceed through vetting and balloting conducted on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the NDC, Theophilus Tetteh-Chaie, assured during the filing process that all aspirants are capable and well qualified to contest the seat, adding that the party will rally behind whoever emerges victorious to ensure victory in the by-election.
Ayawaso East is considered a political stronghold of the NDC, making today’s primary crucial in determining the likely next MP for the constituency.
