The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has intensified campaigning in Ghana’s Eastern Region ahead of a September 2 parliamentary by-election in Akwatia.
The party’s candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu endorsed unanimously following the death of the incumbent MP is leading outreach efforts backed by senior officials, including General Secretary Justin Kodua.
At constituency meetings, Kodua urged voters to support Asumadu, highlighting his record of community development “even without political power.” He reminded attendees of Asumadu’s uncontested selection as constituency treasurer, stating, “Everyone attested to his qualities and genuine support for Akwatia’s progress.” The NPP framed the campaign as a unity push to retain the seat.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold its primaries to select a candidate on August 4, 2025. The Akwatia by-election marks an early test for both parties ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
