Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) staged a unity walk in Tamale on Saturday following the party’s presidential primaries that elected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The peace walk was organized to foster reconciliation and solidarity among supporters of the various aspirants who contested in the primaries. The event brought together party faithful from across the Northern Region, with participants proudly wearing T-shirts bearing the images of all the candidates who vied for the flagbearer position.

The symbolic gesture was meant to demonstrate that despite the internal contest, the party remains one family with a shared vision ahead of the 2028 polls. The unity walk, christened “Let’s Unite to Win Power in 2028,” was spearheaded by NPP youth organisers from different constituencies within the region.

According to the organisers, the initiative was necessary to bridge any perceived divisions and energise the grassroots as the party begins early preparations toward recapturing political power. They emphasized that unity is the party’s strongest asset and urged members to set aside their differences and rally behind Bawumia to ensure victory in 2028.

The organisers expressed optimism that with a united front and renewed commitment at all levels, the NPP would be well-positioned to secure success in the next general elections.

The unity walk in Tamale represents one of several reconciliation initiatives launched across the country following the January 31, 2026 presidential primaries. Dr. Bawumia secured 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent of the total valid votes cast, to defeat four other contenders in the race.

Former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 percent. He was followed by Dr. Bryan Acheampong, a former Minister for Food and Agriculture, who garnered 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 percent.

A growing wave of post-primary reconciliation and consolidation within the New Patriotic Party gathered fresh momentum on Tuesday when a large delegation of former Members of Parliament and lawyers affiliated to the party paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Bawumia to congratulate him and pledge their full support for his 2028 presidential campaign.

The delegation, made up of former MPs, former ministers, deputy ministers, and board members who served under the Akufo-Addo administration, arrived at Dr. Bawumia’s private residence from Accra and several other regions across the country. The legal team was led by Gary Nimako Marfo, Director of Legal of the party.

Dr. Bawumia received the delegation warmly, thanking them for their show of support and stressing the need for unity, reconciliation, and collective purpose. He urged party members to forgive the past, set aside internal differences, and rally behind a shared vision of returning the NPP to power in 2028.

The Opposition New Patriotic Party is set to start a major reconciliation process among its party members to help boost party unity and properly position the NPP for victory in the 2028 general election. The laudable move is the brainchild of the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential polls, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has announced.

He admitted that there are misunderstandings and few squabbles between some party members, especially in some of the constituencies, and the party has decided to quickly resolve them to help foster unity. Dr. Bawumia has decided to, as quickly as possible, embark on a major reconciliation project to help resolve all the petty differences in the party, especially in some of the constituencies across the country.

NPP presidential flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will personally spearhead efforts to reunite the New Patriotic Party following a divisive presidential primary, his aide Kofi Tonto has said. He’s going to be part and parcel of the process. Every vote matters.

Speaking at a National Thanksgiving Service at the National Mosque on Friday, February 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia cautioned that victory in the 2028 general elections would not come automatically. He stressed that it must be earned through discipline, sacrifice and hard work at the grassroots level, constituency by constituency, household by household, with humility and purpose.

He announced that in the coming weeks, the party would embark on a nationwide engagement to acknowledge the efforts of members and begin reorganizing its policy and party structures to build a stronger, more motivated machinery for 2028.

Dr. Bawumia called for unity, urging party members to put aside their differences and rally behind the collective decision of delegates. He said the party must now focus on healing divisions, rebuilding its structures and restoring discipline as it prepared for the 2028 general election.

All four other contenders in the primaries, Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Mr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, in separate statements, accepted the results of the election and pledged their support to Dr. Bawumia and the party’s campaign ahead.

Former Member of Parliament for Suame Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said the NPP cannot win the 2028 elections on their own strength, saying that the party needs the support of floating voters. In this regard, he admonished the NPP members about the need for them to unite and work as a family in order to make the party attractive and appealing to the floating voters so victory 2028 will be possible.

The NPP held power in Ghana from 2017 to 2025 under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, with Dr. Bawumia serving as Vice President throughout the administration. The party lost the 2024 general elections to the National Democratic Congress led by John Dramani Mahama, who secured his second non-consecutive presidential term.

The unity initiatives reflect recognition within the NPP that internal cohesion will be critical to mounting a competitive challenge in 2028. Presidential primaries, while democratic and necessary, often create divisions that require deliberate reconciliation efforts to heal before general elections.

The Northern Region represents a strategic political battleground for both major parties. While the region has historically leaned toward the NDC, the NPP has made significant inroads in recent elections, making grassroots unity particularly important for the party’s 2028 prospects.
