The Trump administration has halted part of its military assistance to Ukraine following a strategic review of U.S. weapons inventories, the White House and Pentagon confirmed Tuesday.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated the decision prioritizes “America’s interests” after assessing global military commitments.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth initiated the stockpile review last month, citing three years of Ukraine aid alongside recent operations against Yemen’s Houthi group and Iran. The assessment revealed critically low levels of certain munitions previously pledged to Kyiv. Pentagon Undersecretary Elbridge Colby affirmed ongoing support options for Ukraine but emphasized preserving U.S. readiness for “Administration defense priorities.”

The suspension follows President Donald Trump’s remarks at last week’s NATO summit, where he acknowledged Ukraine’s urgent request for Patriot missile systems. “We’re going to see if we can make some available. We need them too,” Trump told reporters after meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Notably, Hegseth recently skipped a Ukraine aid coordination meeting—the first absence by a U.S. defense secretary since the conflict began. Analysts interpret these developments as signaling potential further aid reductions. The U.S. has provided over $66 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s February 2022 invasion according to Associated Press records.
