US Diplomat Highlights Shared Democratic Values at Independence Event

Acting U.S. Chargé d’Affaires emphasized historical parallels between American and Ghanaian independence during a July 4 reception in Accra.
The speech marked America’s 249th anniversary while noting Ghana’s 68-year journey since decolonization. Both nations recently witnessed former presidents defeat incumbent vice presidents in elections, reinforcing democratic resilience.
The diplomat underscored decades of bilateral cooperation, citing U.S.-supported initiatives in health infrastructure, agricultural security, and military training that strengthened regional stability. Duty-free access under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was highlighted as a 25-year economic cornerstone, creating thousands of Ghanaian jobs. Future partnerships were framed around private-sector growth in energy and mining, contingent on favorable investment climates.
Security collaboration remains pivotal, with joint efforts to counter extremist threats and secure borders. The address affirmed shared commitments to free speech, press freedom, and institutional accountability—values deemed essential for addressing global challenges. The Chargé d’Affaires assumed duties following Ambassador Virginia Palmer’s May retirement.
