Volta Chiefs Cite Development Focus in Mahama Endorsement
Volta Regional Minister James Gunu characterized the region’s 90.12% electoral support for President John Mahama as a deliberate affirmation of the National Democratic Congress’ development agenda, during a formal engagement at the Presidency.
Gunu led a delegation from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in discussions focused on accelerating infrastructure projects and strengthening government-traditional authority collaboration.
Gunu attributed the unprecedented voter confidence to three factors: Mahama’s demonstrated leadership experience, the NDC manifesto’s specific commitments to Volta development, and historical progress achieved under previous NDC administrations. “This wasn’t just another manifesto. It was a contract of purpose detailing 33 transformational projects,” Gunu stated, referencing plans spanning road networks, industrial parks, education, and job creation. He emphasized the region’s “clear political memory” of tangible development under NDC governance.
Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, acknowledged early positive signals from the administration, including Mahama’s selection of Volta for his inaugural post-election visit and appointments of natives to key government positions. While noting improvements in macroeconomic stability—specifically citing cedi stabilization and moderated inflation—he urged expedited action on critical infrastructure.
The chiefs formally requested timely execution of budgeted road projects, completion of the Keta Port and Ho Airport, resolution of delays plaguing eastern corridor roads, and coastal defenses for Agavedzi. Togbe Hodo further advocated for enhanced capacity at the University of Health and Allied Sciences to develop healthcare exports and address youth unemployment, alongside structured support for traditional councils participating in national initiatives like the Feed Ghana Project.
“We shall continue to support your government with ideas to reset this nation’s trajectory,” Togbe Hodo affirmed, underscoring the traditional leadership’s commitment to partnership. The meeting concluded with mutual commitments to prioritize the region’s development blueprint outlined in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto.
