Volta NDC blames VRA for the continuous destruction of properties

The Volta Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for an immediate halt to the spillage of the Akosombo Dam until adequate safety measures are put in place. In a statement signed by the party’s Volta Regional Secretary, Hon. James Gunu, the party has expressed concern over the danger the spillage is to the people residing in the catchment area and downstream of the dam.
In a statement released on Thursday, October 12th, 2023, the party urged the Volta River Authority (VRA) to prioritize the safety of the people in the area.
According to the NDC, the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, which began on October this year, has already caused significant damage to property, businesses, and farmland in various communities downstream. They called on the Nana Addo led NPP administration to take immediate action to mitigate the effects of the spillage and compensate those affected.
The party has also appealed to the general public and other benevolent organizations to come to the aide of the flood sufferers in the Volta Region.
The party also criticized the VRA for their failure to provide adequate warning to residents before the spillage, and for neglecting to put in place measures to mitigate the potential damage to lives and property downstream.
They requested that the VRA take steps to prevent the spillage from occurring in the future or from causing harm to the communities in the catchment area.
The spillage of the Akosombo Dam is a recurring issue, and this call by the NDC for the VRA to prioritize the safety of the people in the area is a necessary step towards preventing further damage and protecting the lives and livelihoods of those affected by the spillage.
It is imperative for the VRA to work with all stakeholders to ensure the safety of the people and implement measures to prevent further incidents.
