Daddy Lumba’s one-week observance draws thousands to Independence Square

Ghanaian highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, was honoured on Saturday, August 30, 2025, as thousands of mourners gathered at Independence Square in Accra for his one-week observance.

Originally planned for the University of Ghana Stadium, the venue was changed due to a noise-making ban in the La Traditional Area.

Lumba, born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta, Ashanti Region, passed away on July 26, 2025, at the age of 60 after a short illness at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra.

The solemn event featured live performances of his timeless classics, including Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, and Theresa, as fans dressed in black thronged the square to celebrate his enduring impact on Ghanaian music.

Organised by the Creative Arts Agency in collaboration with the Fosu family, the memorial marked the first in a series of activities celebrating Daddy Lumba’s life and legacy.

Details of the final funeral rites in Kumasi are expected to be announced soon.
